The famous Ingleton Waterfalls Trail begins and ends in the Yorkshire Dales village of Ingleton.
The trail, which opened in 1885, is 8 kilometres (5 miles) long with a rise of 169 metres (554 feet) has some of the most spectacular waterfall and woodland scenery in the north of England. It passes through ancient oak woodland and magnificent scenery via a series of stunning waterfalls and geological features.
Ingleton Waterfalls Trail is divided into nine main areas, each with its own distinct geological features and associated plant life.
The trail commences at the Broadwood car park in Ingleton village and follows the banks of the River Twiss, through Swilla Glenn with its coin embedded tree and on to Pecca Falls, Pecca Twin Falls, and climbs steeply to Holly Bush Spout and Thornton Force, the most famous and spectacular of the waterfalls, were the river plunges 14 metres over limestone cliffs. The waterfall served as an inspiration for the landscape artist William Turner.
A footbridge bridge crosses the Twiss and leads on to Twistleton Lane. It then follows Twistleton Lane down past Scar End Farm and Twistleton Hall and crosses Oddies Lane to Beezley's Farm.
Past Beezley's the trail begins to descend along the banks of the River Doe. This river emerges near God's Bridge close to Chapel-le-Dale and passes through oak woodland to reach Beezley's Falls. From there the River Doe descends over Triple Spout, three stunning waterfalls all side by side.
As the trail continues, it passes above Rival Falls, where the river plunges into a pool known locally as the "Black Hole" which is reputed to be over 80 feet deep. It continues onto Baxenghyl Gorge, where there is a viewing bridge which gives a dramatic view of the river far belowSnow Falls and finally walk through Twistleton Glenn and back to Ingleton. In Ingleton, the Twiss and the Doe meet to form the River Greta.
The Ingleton Waterfall Trail is privately owned by the Ingleton Scenery Company and an entrance fee is charged.
